In 2009, the Pacific Fisheries Resource Conservation Council published a report which recommended that Canada participate in the Salmon Stronghold Partnership in order to test the Salmon Strongholds approach in Canada, including the scientific evaluation and ranking of a potential stronghold (Beeson, 2009).
Note: The report is accompanied by a plain-language brochure.
On June 24, 2009, the PFRCC held a news conference at the VancouverAquarium to announce a pilot project implementing Salmon Strongholds inCanada.

The idea underlying Salmon Strongholds is to ensure thriving fish habitat conditions where it is most crucial to maintain the abundance, productivity and diversity of wild Pacific salmon species and populations. It emphasizes the prevention of problems and reduction of threats to wild salmon in geographical areas of particular importance, complementing the emphasis in recent years on crisis management of salmon stocks.
The PFRCC also released its scientific study proving that the Harrison River meets the criteria for a Salmon Stronghold. View the study here.
The extent to which fish habitats are impacted by human activities at the landscape level is now being assessed and studied by fisheries scientists around the world. While there have been extensive efforts to protect and restore fish habitats in recent decades, traditional approaches have focused almost exclusively on in-stream and riparian areas. More recent work has begun to incorporate a broader, landscape perspective when developing strategies and policies aimed at protecting fisheries values.
Community meetings held in 2008 in Fort Langley and Sechelt have now been posted to the web, under Reports

The PFRCC is pleased to be one of the sponsors of the State of the Salmon, the second international conference with a theme of "Bringing the Future into Focus." The conference, from February 2-5, 2009 in Vancouver, is dedicated to the conservation of Pacific salmon throughout their native range. Rapidly changing climate, habitat and markets highlight the need for key scientific information and effective management practices from the Pacific Rim salmon nations.
